Affordable = Efficient

Given the trends in energy costs, an affordable house must be efficient. We start with an efficient buidling envelope that minimizes heating, cooling, and lighting requirements. We encourage responsible home energy use by providing energy efficient appliances.

Building Design

Housing Development

The first step in creating an environmentally responsible affordable home is to reduce the need to turn on energy-using equipment. To us, this means a well-insulated envelope and appropriate window placement.

The walls and roofs of our homes are built using structural insulated panels (SIPs). The SIPs consist of a foam insulation sandwiched between layers of sheathing. Unlike conventional construction, the SIP foam forms a nearly-continuous, air-tight, insulating barrier to keep the home warm in winter and cool in summer. The result is a higher insulating value for the same overall wall and roof thickness. We add high performance windows with insulating glass to complete the envelope.

Starting with a well-insulated envelope, energy needs can be further reduced by proper sizing and placement of windows and overhangs. With optimal window placement and correct sizing of roof overhangs and shading devices, the building can admit solar energy in the winter for passive heating and shade the solar energy in the summer to reduce cooling.

Of course, windows are more than just a thermal envelope element. They provide views, light, fresh air, and a connection to the outdoor environment. In our designs, even these functions are opportunities for efficiency. We use north-facing clerestory windows and light interior paint colors to enhance daylighting without glare. The window placement also encourages natural ventilation to reduce cooling needs.

Appliances and Equipment

Even with the perfect design, our homes will still need energy to meet the demands of our life style. Appliances consume significant energy resources for refrigeration, cooking, dishwashing, and laundry. Electrical lighting Heating and cooling equipment provide comfort and electrical lighting complements daylight for illumination.

Energy efficient appliances are readily available in the marketplace and are included in all our homes. We have designed lighting to meet visual needs with minimal energy use. Heating and cooling needs are met with high-efficiency heat pumps.

Now if we could get the kids to turn off the lights when they leave the room...
